Is hail damage always visible?

What you can see from below, and what you cannot

From the ground you might spot obviously missing or lifted shingles after a wind event, and you can often see dents on gutters and downspouts, which are genuinely useful evidence.

What you cannot see is the damage that matters most: circular patches where granules have been knocked off, and the bruised mat underneath. Those need someone within a few feet, and the bruise is found by touch as much as by eye.

Both kinds of mistake are common

False negatives: a homeowner looks up, sees nothing, and never files. The roof carries real damage that shortens its life by years, and by the time it leaks the event is long outside any reporting window.

False positives: someone knocks after a storm, says there is hail damage, and a claim goes in for a roof that is simply old. That is worse than a waste of time — it is the pattern that makes insurers skeptical of legitimate claims from the same area.

So what should you actually do

After a significant hail event, get someone on the roof who will photograph what they find and show you. Look at the metal first — gutters, vents, flashing — because dents there are quick to assess and help establish that impact occurred.
