Harundale was the first suburban development in the area, and a lot of Glen Burnie’s post-war housing is still standing. Those roofs have been replaced before, and what earlier crews left underneath is the real question.
Why local actually matters here
Roughly 45% of the homes in Glen Burnie’s two ZIPs went up between 1940 and 1979. Most roofs here are not first roofs, and it is worth knowing what is under them.
Glen Burnie grew early. Crain Highway opened in 1927 and Ritchie Highway in 1939, and in the early 1950s Harundale went up along Ritchie Highway as the first suburban development in the area, followed in 1958 by Harundale Mall, the first enclosed shopping center east of the Mississippi. That early start is still visible in the housing numbers. In both 21060 and 21061 about 45% of homes were built between 1940 and 1979, and the 1950s were the busiest decade of that stretch.
A house from that era has been reroofed more than once, so the useful questions are about what earlier crews left behind. Was the flashing at the chimney and the walls replaced, or bent back and reused? Did a second layer of shingles go straight over the first? Was soft decking ever dealt with, or just covered? On a roof replacement here we photograph the deck once the old roof is off, because that is the part nobody has seen in decades.
Harundale itself was built as two- and three-bedroom ranchers and Cape Cods on lots of a quarter acre or less. The rancher is the simpler roof. The Cape Cod is steeper, and its dormers and half-story rooms mean more flashing and an attic squeezed in behind knee walls, where ventilation is hard to get right. When an upstairs room under that roof runs hot in summer, the fix is often in the ventilation rather than the shingle.
About one home in five in 21060 is attached rather than detached, and a little under that in 21061. On a townhouse row the roof is usually low-slope, which means membrane rather than shingle, and the detail at the party wall matters as much as the middle of the roof. A leak at a shared wall becomes your neighbor’s problem as well as yours, which is a conversation worth having before the work rather than after it.
Glen Burnie is not an incorporated town, so permit requirements come from Anne Arundel County and depend on whether the work is like-for-like or structural. We confirm what your address needs before work starts.

“It’s been great working with Dmitry and Bravo roofing for several years now. They did a full tear off and replace of my flat roof back in 2019. I had a leak last year and Dmitry came out to inspect. He found that an old roof antenna had fallen off and punctured it.”
Tony DeBraccio · Google“I highly recommend Bravo for any kind of roof repair or construction. Dmitry, the business owner, is meticulous and detailed. He personally assessed the leaking overhang roof in our old house and delivered a thorough and economical solution.”
Google review · verified“Very professional, reasonably priced, quick and did a great job. 10/10”

Almost certainly not the original roof, and possibly more than one layer. What matters is whether earlier crews replaced the flashing and dealt with soft decking or covered it. We photograph the deck once the old roof is off, and decking replacement is priced per sheet on the quote up front.
That is an Anne Arundel County question, because Glen Burnie is not incorporated, and it depends on whether the work is like-for-like or structural. We confirm what is required for your address before work begins.
Often it is the ventilation rather than the shingle. The attic space behind the knee walls on a Cape Cod is small and hard to vent, and heat builds up there. We look at intake and exhaust before recommending anything more expensive.
Sometimes it is possible, but on a house this old it hides the one thing we most want to see, which is the decking. We will tell you what an overlay would cover up before you decide.
The roof is usually low-slope rather than pitched, and the party-wall detail matters as much as the middle of the roof. A failure there affects the house next door too, so it is worth raising with the neighbor before the work.
Yes. Ferndale shares the 21061 ZIP and part of 21060 is Pasadena, all in Anne Arundel County. If your mail says 21060 or 21061, the answer is yes.
