Home › Christmas light installation › Columbia
Columbia was built village by village from 1967, and a quarter or more of its homes are townhouses. On a shared roofline a display involves the neighbors, and now and then a question for your village covenant advisor.
Lighting homes in Columbia
In Columbia the roof you want to light is often one section of a longer one. Roughly 29% of homes in 21045 and about 24% in 21044 are townhouses.
On a townhouse group the eave line runs straight across several front doors, and your section ends at the party wall. Lights that stop halfway along a line can look unfinished, so it is worth a word with the neighbors first. Some rows light the whole run together, and some keep each house to its own section and let the front planting do the rest. Either way, we stay off a neighbor’s roof unless they have said yes.
Each village has a volunteer Architectural Committee, and homeowners are expected to get its approval for exterior modifications. Villages set their own guidelines, so if you are unsure whether anything about your display needs a word with someone, your village’s covenant advisor is the person to ask before the lights go up.
In 21045, which takes in Oakland Mills and Long Reach, about half of all homes were built in the 1970s, and ranchers, colonials and split-levels sit close to townhomes there. A rancher gives one long, low eave that lights cleanly. A split-level has roof planes at different heights, so part of the plan is choosing which lines to outline. A house from that decade is usually on its second or third roof, and we look at the edge before anything runs along it.
Housing figures are from published census data for ZIPs 21044 and 21045. Covenant guidance per Columbia Living, Wilde Lake Village and Howard County.

Planned around your house
Tell us how much or how little you want. Some people want the roofline and nothing else. Others want the whole front of the house. The plan and the price are in writing before anything goes up.
Why a roofer
Most of the damage from Christmas lights is not visible until spring. These are the things we see on roofs after the decorations come down.
We are a roofing company first. If something looks wrong after the season, we can inspect the roof for free and photograph what we find.
Installation and maintenance
Call or send the form with your address and what you would like lit. A rough idea is enough to start.
We check the roofline, the roof surface and where the power will come from, then put the plan and the price in writing.
Licensed, insured roofers working at height every week of the year, not a seasonal crew borrowed for December.
If a section goes dark, call us and we arrange a visit to put it right.
Neighborhoods, roads and ZIPs
Columbia mail uses 21044, 21045 and 21046, all in Howard County. The ZIP tells you the county. The village tells you which Architectural Committee to ask.

“It’s been great working with Dmitry and Bravo roofing for several years now. They did a full tear off and replace of my flat roof back in 2019. I had a leak last year and Dmitry came out to inspect. He found that an old roof antenna had fallen off and punctured it.”
Tony DeBraccio · Google“I highly recommend Bravo for any kind of roof repair or construction. Dmitry, the business owner, is meticulous and detailed. He personally assessed the leaking overhang roof in our old house and delivered a thorough and economical solution.”
Google review · verified“Very professional, reasonably priced, quick and did a great job. 10/10”

Yes. Your section runs from party wall to party wall, and that is what we light. It often looks more finished when the neighbors on either side light theirs too, so it is worth asking them before the install. We will not step onto a neighbor’s roof without their permission.
We cannot answer that for every village, because each one sets its own guidelines. Your village’s covenant advisor is the right person to ask, and it is worth doing before the lights go up rather than after.
It depends on how many feet of roofline and gutter are being lit, how high and steep the roof is, and what else is on the plan, such as trees, windows or a walkway. We look at the house first and give you the price in writing, so you are comparing a real number rather than a per-foot estimate that grows on the day.
It should not, and as a roofing company it is the part we care most about. Nothing should be fastened through your shingles, and nobody should be leaning a ladder on your gutters. If you want to know exactly how your roofline will be attached, ask us before the install and we will walk you through it.
If a strand or a section of your display stops working during the season, call us on (410) 977-4411 and we will arrange a visit to put it right. The details for your house are confirmed in your written quote.
Yes. Bravo Roofing is a licensed Maryland home improvement contractor, MHIC #114601, carrying $1,000,000 in liability coverage plus workers compensation. The same people who replace roofs across Baltimore are the ones on yours.
Earlier is better. Installation dates fill as the season gets closer, so calling in the fall gives you the widest choice of dates. Call (410) 977-4411 for the current schedule.
