Most Ellicott City homes went up in the 1980s and 1990s, on roofs that are usually still sound underneath the shingle. Around Main Street the 1772 mill town is older, steeper and under Howard County historic review.
Lighting homes in Ellicott City
The name is old, but most of the houses are not. About 59% of homes in 21043 went up between 1980 and 2009, with the 1990s the biggest single decade.
In 21042 the 1980s were the biggest building decade, and in 21043 it was the 1990s. On houses of that age the shingle is often near the end of a normal life while the decking under it is still sound. For lights that is good news. The roof takes a careful crew well, and the work is mostly about layout: which eaves face the street, which gables to outline, and where the power comes from.
In 21042 close to nine in ten single-family homes are detached. In 21043, the ZIP that takes in Ilchester, about a third are townhouses, around 4,200 of them. On a townhouse your roofline is one piece of a longer one, and units built in the same year often look identical from the street. A display agreed with the neighbors reads better than one that stops short at the party wall.
Downtown is a different picture. Ellicott City was founded in 1772, Main Street is built largely of local gray granite, and gable roofs with dormers and cross gables are the most common shape. A roof like that has a lot of short lines, so the plan is choosing a few that read from the street. Inside the historic district the county’s guidelines favor keeping historic slate, metal and wood roofing, so we work around those materials, never through them.

Planned around your house
Tell us how much or how little you want. Some people want the roofline and nothing else. Others want the whole front of the house. The plan and the price are in writing before anything goes up.
Why a roofer
Most of the damage from Christmas lights is not visible until spring. These are the things we see on roofs after the decorations come down.
We are a roofing company first. If something looks wrong after the season, we can inspect the roof for free and photograph what we find.
Installation and maintenance
Call or send the form with your address and what you would like lit. A rough idea is enough to start.
We check the roofline, the roof surface and where the power will come from, then put the plan and the price in writing.
Licensed, insured roofers working at height every week of the year, not a seasonal crew borrowed for December.
If a section goes dark, call us and we arrange a visit to put it right.

“It’s been great working with Dmitry and Bravo roofing for several years now. They did a full tear off and replace of my flat roof back in 2019. I had a leak last year and Dmitry came out to inspect. He found that an old roof antenna had fallen off and punctured it.”
Tony DeBraccio · Google“I highly recommend Bravo for any kind of roof repair or construction. Dmitry, the business owner, is meticulous and detailed. He personally assessed the leaking overhang roof in our old house and delivered a thorough and economical solution.”
Google review · verified“Very professional, reasonably priced, quick and did a great job. 10/10”

We can look at it. Howard County’s Historic Preservation Commission issues certificates of approval for exterior changes there, and its guidelines favor keeping historic slate, metal and wood roofing. We do not fasten anything through those materials. If you are unsure whether your display needs a word with the county, ask before the install and we will plan around the answer.
Usually, yes. Most Ellicott City housing went up in the 1980s and 1990s, and on those houses the decking under an aging shingle is usually still sound. The shingle itself is what we are careful with. We look at the roof before quoting, and if something on it needs attention first, we tell you.
It depends on how many feet of roofline and gutter are being lit, how high and steep the roof is, and what else is on the plan, such as trees, windows or a walkway. We look at the house first and give you the price in writing, so you are comparing a real number rather than a per-foot estimate that grows on the day.
It should not, and as a roofing company it is the part we care most about. Nothing should be fastened through your shingles, and nobody should be leaning a ladder on your gutters. If you want to know exactly how your roofline will be attached, ask us before the install and we will walk you through it.
If a strand or a section of your display stops working during the season, call us on (410) 977-4411 and we will arrange a visit to put it right. The details for your house are confirmed in your written quote.
Yes. Bravo Roofing is a licensed Maryland home improvement contractor, MHIC #114601, carrying $1,000,000 in liability coverage plus workers compensation. The same people who replace roofs across Baltimore are the ones on yours.
Earlier is better. Installation dates fill as the season gets closer, so calling in the fall gives you the widest choice of dates. Call (410) 977-4411 for the current schedule.
