Christmas light installation in Frederick, MD

Downtown Frederick is row houses, twins and older detached homes inside a historic district, with gable and mansard roofs, dormers and slate. Ballenger Creek and Spring Ridge, outside the city limits, are newer houses and simpler to plan.

Lighting homes in Frederick

Holiday light installation in Frederick, Frederick County

In 21701 the single biggest group of homes predates 1940, and there are 6,276 attached single-family homes against 7,541 detached ones. Downtown, the roofline you light is old and often shared.

Frederick created its local historic district in 1952, and today the Historic Preservation Commission regulates changes to the whole building envelope, roofs included. Whether a display needs any word with the city is a question for the city. What we bring is how the roof should be treated: the guidelines call for slate to be repaired and standing-seam metal replaced in kind, so we put nothing through either, and plan the display around what the roof allows.

Clarke Place, laid out in 1894 just south of the Maryland School for the Deaf, has mansard and gable roofs, dormers, snow guards and some flat-seam metal. A mansard is steep on the sides, and dormers and snow guards break up the lines you might want to outline. Those are roofs for someone comfortable on a pitch, and the plan usually favors a few strong lines over tracing every edge.

Downtown rows share a roofline, and some of the shed roofs at the back are nearly flat. The street-facing edge is usually the one worth lighting, and on a row it is worth agreeing with the neighbors where the line stops. Ballenger Creek, just south of the city limits, is newer, and in 21703 attached homes outnumber detached ones, so the same conversation applies on a newer townhouse row.

Housing figures are from published census data for ZIPs 21701, 21702 and 21703. Historic district rules per the Frederick Town Historic District Design Guidelines (2019 edition).

Planned around your house

What a Christmas lights plan can cover in Frederick

Tell us how much or how little you want. Some people want the roofline and nothing else. Others want the whole front of the house. The plan and the price are in writing before anything goes up.

Rooflines and eavesThe line people see from the street. Measured along the actual eaves and rakes, so the run is planned rather than guessed.
Peaks, gables and dormersOutlining the shape of the roof, not just the bottom edge. This is the part that needs someone comfortable working on a pitch.
Gutter linesA clean horizontal line at the gutter. Gutters are not built to take a ladder’s weight, so how they are reached matters.
Windows and doorsFraming the entrance and the front windows so the house reads well at eye level as well as from the road.
Trees and shrubsWrapped trunks, canopies and front-bed shrubs, planned so the cords do not cross a walkway.
Walkways and drivewaysLighting the path to the door, so the display is also somewhere you can actually walk at night.

Why a roofer

Five ways holiday lights damage a roof

Most of the damage from Christmas lights is not visible until spring. These are the things we see on roofs after the decorations come down.

✕
Nails and staples through shinglesEvery fastener that goes through a shingle is a hole in the roof. It stays there long after the lights come down, and it is a common source of a small winter leak.
✕
Clips that lift the shingle tabsForcing a clip under a tab can break the seal strip that holds it down. Lifted tabs are what wind gets under.
✕
Ladders leaning on the gutterA gutter is not designed to carry a ladder and a person. A bent hanger or a gutter pulled off pitch holds water at the fascia.
✕
Walking on the wrong roofSlate, old tile and some older shingles crack underfoot. Whether a roof can be walked at all is a roofer’s question.
✕
Cords not rated for outdoor useIndoor strands and extension cords left out in Maryland rain and freeze-thaw are the part of a display that fails first.

Straight answers

Frederick Christmas light installation questions

My house is in the Frederick Town Historic District. Can it have Christmas lights?

We can look at it and plan around the roof. We do not speak for the Historic Preservation Commission, and if you are unsure whether anything about a display needs its attention, the city is the place to ask. On slate and standing-seam metal, which the guidelines ask owners to keep, nothing goes through the roof.

Our Clarke Place house has a mansard roof. What can be lit?

Usually the eave at the bottom of the mansard and the dormer fronts, and sometimes more, depending on the house. Snow guards and flat-seam metal are part of what makes those roofs worth keeping, so we work around them rather than over them. We look at the house before quoting and tell you which lines will read well from the street.

How much does Christmas light installation cost?

It depends on how many feet of roofline and gutter are being lit, how high and steep the roof is, and what else is on the plan, such as trees, windows or a walkway. We look at the house first and give you the price in writing, so you are comparing a real number rather than a per-foot estimate that grows on the day.

Will hanging Christmas lights damage my roof?

It should not, and as a roofing company it is the part we care most about. Nothing should be fastened through your shingles, and nobody should be leaning a ladder on your gutters. If you want to know exactly how your roofline will be attached, ask us before the install and we will walk you through it.

What does the maintenance part cover?

If a strand or a section of your display stops working during the season, call us on (410) 977-4411 and we will arrange a visit to put it right. The details for your house are confirmed in your written quote.

Are you licensed and insured to work on my roof?

Yes. Bravo Roofing is a licensed Maryland home improvement contractor, MHIC #114601, carrying $1,000,000 in liability coverage plus workers compensation. The same people who replace roofs across Baltimore are the ones on yours.

When should I book holiday light installation?

Earlier is better. Installation dates fill as the season gets closer, so calling in the fall gives you the widest choice of dates. Call (410) 977-4411 for the current schedule.
